The APS Character Strengths Snapshot Survey is a concise assessment designed to provide schools with a quick understanding of pupils character strength profile at any given time. It can be used to explore the impact of using the APS approach by using it as a baseline survey at the start and repeating the survey at key times of the academic year. This survey provides a valuable starting point for schools interested in exploring how to develop their character strengths work with pupils.
Introduction
This survey is going to ask you about your character strengths. There are no right or wrong answers. All we ask if that you fill in this survey honestly and reply how you feel at this moment in time.
What this survey measures
This survey is structured around 8 scales.
Overall Scale
This overall score provides a measure of a student's character strengths and personal competencies. By combining a range of virtues, it offers a single, holistic score that can be used to track personal development over time. This score acts as a valuable indicator of a student’s overall ability to navigate social and personal challenges and find meaning in their life.
Sub-scales
This subscale measures a student's cognitive and intellectual strengths. It assesses their curiosity, creativity, open-mindedness and ability to think critically. High scores suggest a student is an active learner who enjoys exploring new ideas, concepts, and perspectives.
This subscale focuses on a student's emotional and interpersonal competencies. It measures their capacity for empathy, kindness, loyalty and deep connection with others and the world around them. High scores indicate a student who is compassionate and forms strong, caring relationships.
The results from within this subscale evaluates a student's courage, persistence and integrity. It assesses their ability to be brave, work diligently and act honestly even when no one is watching. A high score suggests a student who is resilient, determined, and guided by a strong sense of personal values.
This subscale measures a student's social and collaborative skills. It assesses their ability to work well in groups, lead others and treat people fairly. A high score suggests a student is a strong team player and a positive contributor to their community.
This subscale focuses on a student's capacity for optimism, humor, and gratitude. It measures their ability to see the good in situations, find joy in simple things and appreciate the skills of others. High scores indicate a student with a positive outlook who finds purpose and connection in their daily life.
This subscale assesses a student's ability to control impulses, learn from mistakes and bounce back from setbacks. It measures their self-awareness and capacity for forgiveness and continuous improvement. A high score indicates a student who is resilient, reflective, and has strong self-control.
This subscale measures a student's understanding of their own strengths and their ability to apply them to achieve goals. It assesses whether they believe they have the personal power to succeed and if they see growth as a collective, learnable trait. The scores indicate a student's sense of purpose and self-efficacy, showing their conviction and drive to overcome challenges.
